Good and Evil?

Can the same person be both good and evil?  What character from To Kill A Mockingbird do you think best embodies these characteristics?

  1. Deann O.-Yes the same person can be good and evil. I think that Scout kinda embodies these characteristics because she is a good kid but sometimes she lets the worst take ahold of her

  2. Katelyn S. Yes, the same person can be good and evil. The best character from "To Kill A Mockingbird" that embodies these characteristics would be Mrs.Dubose. You can see her evil side by the way she treated Scout and Jem. She screamed at them for the way Atticus is raising them and for defending a black man. By the end of her death looking back I see her as a good women because she wanted to fix her addiction before death so she had Jem read to her for hours instead of taking her pain meds. A person always has their bad days and good days which can be seen as good and evil.

  3. Brenna W - Yes, a person can be good and evil. I just went through the books and my notes, but I cannot find a character that perfectly matches this description. I think all of the negative or "evil" characters are mainly presented as a bad people, with not much depth. I know in the real world that someone cannot be completely good, nor can someone be completely evil. So I assume all the characters we see in a negative way in this book have more to their stories than we think.

  4. Cheyenne P.- Yes, the same person can be good and evil. I don't really think any of the characters in "To Kill A Mockingbird" are necessarily evil, but there are some who can come across a mean because of what their morals or beliefs are. Mrs. Dubose was like that and always had something hurtful to say to Scout or Jem, and Scout and Jem always thought she was a horrible old lady who had nothing else better to do. They didn't know her whole story though; they jumped to conclusions and judged her too quickly. I think in "To Kill A Mockingbird" a lot of people assume others are "evil," like Boo Radley or Tom Robinson, but they don't really know who they are as a person and what their story is.

  5. Kimberly B.- Yes, the same person can be both good and evil. The person that best characterizes this is Mrs. Dubose. She showed Jem and Scout more of her bad side and didn't give them the chance to see the good in her until Atticus told them that she was a brave women.

  6. Collin K. Yes, I think people can be both good and evil. The peron that best fits these characteristics in "To Kill A MOckingbird" would probably be Aunt Alexandra because in Scout's eyes she is this mean lady that is trying to change the way that she is, but in my eyes I see a person who is trying to keep Scout out of trouble and trying to make her a better person.

  7. Bailey P. Yes, I think a person can be both good and evil. The person I believe that bests fits these traits is Mrs. Dubose. Right away you think of her as an evil person because some of the things she said to Scout and Jem, but then you see the good side of her when she trys and stops her addiction.

  8. Olivia N. No, I don't believe a person can be good or evil. I see good and evil as ideas that we, as humans, use to explain other's natural actions. Everyone will do good and bad things. That does not make them a good or bad person. Although I think all of the characters have high and low points, Mrs. Dubose shows that she has both qualities the most.

  9. Brady T. Yes they can, there are people who are like that. We like to call them anitheroes. They do what they want when they want it whether its good or evi. I believe that Mrs. Dubose character is a half n' half girl. She can say ALOT of mean things to the kids, but she has shown alot of her good side to.
